Back in February of this year an 80-year-old Oroville resident reported that they had checks stolen from their mailbox. Those stolen checks were reportedly used to create fictitious checks that were then cashed at an online bank. On Friday Butte County Sheriff's deputies stopped one of the alleged suspects, identified James Dye as he was driving near the Oroville Walmart. Deputies searched the vehicle and reportedly found evidence of 40 other potential victims of identity theft along with equipment used to create fake checks. According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, deputies also allegedly found mortgage payout checks from Camp Fire victims that Dye was reportedly using for is own personal gain.

A second suspect, 28-year-old Ashley Buck is currently wanted for questioning.
