LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — California State University officials say they need nearly $250 million more in state funding for the next academic year than Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget calls for.
Assistant Vice Chancellor Robert Turnage told the board of trustees Tuesday that $371 million in additional funds is needed to pay for items ranging from salary raises to maintenance and equipment.
Brown has agreed to give the 23-campus system $125 million extra, of which $10 million will be spent to expanded online education to serve more students.
Brown, who attended Tuesday's meeting, says $250 million is more dream than reality. He also predicts that the requested $86 million for 3 percent salary raises will be hard to get approved by the Legislature, as other state workers have not received pay hikes.
