Gov Newsome Back Proposes New Bill re: Police Misconduct

Governor Newsom proposes shifting the responsibility of sharing police misconduct information to local law enforcement agencies. The current protocol for making officer misconduct and decertification cases public is handled by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. That means the state of California handles information requests about officer excessive force, sexual assault and dishonesty. The change to move this information gathering process to the local agencies is proposed as a cost saving measure of the Governor's current budget. Critics of the shift say something this significant needs to be a legislative measure, rather than a budget item. They also say this will significantly decrease transparency because information requests for misconduct would be handled by the departments where the alleged misconduct occurred. The budget, including this measure, should be finalized by the end of this month.
