IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY AT COWAN STADIUM....ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE
PULLING FOR THE ROADRUNNERS
The game was never really in doubt. The Butte College Roadrunners would score on their first drive of the game against the Shasta Knights....and they would keep on scoring for nearly three quarters. The only question was whether the Roadrunners would break their school record for points in a game at 73. And, even though they wouldn't surpass that mark, they turned in a performance that is sure to propel them to bigger and better things the rest of the season.
For the Knights, their 2-0 record came to a crashing end as they were beaten in every way imaginable.
Just minutes into the 2nd quarter the Roadrunners were up 14-0, only the put the game away in a decisive 31 second stretch with under 13 minutes left in the first half. A touchdown, was followed by an interception return for a score, which was followed by a fumble return on a kick-off for a touchdown. Turning a two-score game into a 35-0 blow-out.
Butte quarterback Nelson Fishback primarily played the first half and was 7-10 for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Derrick Seward had 6 carries for 82 yards. Butte compiled nearly 250 yards on the ground against the Knights with 10 different ball carriers getting a chance to run with the ball.
The offensive star of the game may have been Wes McCoy who only touched the ball twice. He opened the second half with a 105 yard kick-off return for a touchdown and then late in the 3rd quarter, McCoy took the ball out of the wildcat formation and darted right up the gut for a 31 yard scamper and score..
With the win the Roadrunners stay undefeated at 3-0 while Shasta tries to pick up the pieces at 2-1. The Roadrunners will be at Delta College in Stockton next Saturday. Mike Wessels will have the call on 101.7 FM and AM 1340 Fox Sports Chico at 12:45 with the Jeff Jordan Show.
