49ers Win, Raiders lay an egg

The San Francisco 49ers are serving notice that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NFC. Another dominant defensive effort against a Super Bowl contender has the Niners sitting at 2-0. The 49ers stymied Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions all night in a 27-19 win at Candlestick Point.

The Raiders figured the Miami Dolphins would be an easier match-up, and that they would have a chance work out some of those early season inconsistensies.......they figured wrong. The Dolphins ran all over the Raider defense in a 35-13 win in South Florida. The Raiders host the Steelers next week.

The Giants are inching ever closer to a NL West Title. Even though they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-2, the Giants magic number for clinching the west is 9. They open a four-game set against the Rockies tonight at AT & T. You can hear the game on 101.7 FM and AM 1340 at 7:15pm

Despite losing the Orioles 9-5 the Oakland A's still sit three games clear in the American League Wildcard. Oakland took two of three from the birds as they ready themselves for the final two weeks of the season.

The Butte College Football team destroyed the Shasta Knights on Saturday 70-3. The Roadrunners would score three touchdowns in a :31 second span to put the game out of reach. The Roadrunners are now 3-0 and venture to Stockton to play Delta College next Saturday.

Chico State men's and women's cross country shine at the WCC Preview in Portland on Saturday. The Chico State men's soccer team finished second overall, beating division I foes Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, St. Mary's and Santa Clara. Two-time All-American Isaac Chavez finished 5th in the loaded field. The Wildcat women finished third overall.

The Chico State Volleyball team swept their weekend matches at Acker Gym and move to 8-1 overall on the season.

And, the Chico State men's and women's soccer teams played some exciting matches at the Univeristy Soccer Complex.  The Chico women split their matches, losing to Monterey Bay before knocking off Cal State East Bay. The men were looking for a weekend sweep, and literally came within a second of doing so. The Cats beat Monterey on Friday and had a 1-0 lead against East Bay on Sunday.....only to see East Bay score a goal with one second left to tie the match. It eventually ended in a tie.
