Giants miss on Lester: Dubs chase 14th in a row

For the third time this off-season the San Francisco Giants swung and missed on a prospective free agent.

Jon Lester informed the Giants brass last night that he would not sign with them, instead opting to sign a 6-year deal worth 155 million dollars with the Chicago Cubs.

The miss by the Giants means the team that has won three of the past five World Series Championships has come up empty in their pursuit of Pablo Sandoval, Yasmany Tomas and Jon Lester. The Giants now move on to Plan D as they look for reinforcements and upgrades on a team that has confounded baseball experts since their first title in 2010.

The Golden State Warriors will look to extend their winning streak to a franchise best 14 straight games as they host the Houston Rockets tonight at the Oracle. The Warriors may have to do it short-handed as center Andrew Bogut is nursing knee tendenitis and may have to miss the game. The streak has propelled the Warriors to the best record in the NBA sitting at 18-2. Eight of the Warriors 13 wins have come on the road. Game time tonight is 7:30pm

The Giants pulled within two games of the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost at Colorado 16-2. The contenders each have 10 games left.

Pablo Sandoval walked with one out, Brandon Crawford singled and pinch-hitter Brandon Belt walked, setting up Duffy. Crawford had four hits.

Sergio Romo (6-4) pitched one inning, and Duffy batted for him. Santiago Casilla got his 17th save.

(AP) — Justin Morneau tied a season high with six RBIs, including five as part of an eight-run first inning against spot starter Carlos Frias, and the Colorado Rockies routed the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 16-2 on Wednesday.

Morneau hit a three-run homer and a two-run single in the opening frame as the last-place Rockies chased Frias (0-1) from the game after two outs. Morneau and Carlos Gonzalez are the only Rockies players to drive in five runs in an inning.

Morneau had three hits and a sacrifice fly, raising his average to .320 and leaping over Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison for the NL batting lead.
