Thanksgiving Holiday Pet Safety Tips

The City of Chico Animal Services has some pet safety tips for the Thanksgiving holiday.

*Rich and fatty foods can cause digestive problems for your pets from mild diarrhea to gastroenteritis to pancreatitis; both are potentially life threatening.

*Pets should never be given raw foods, including eggs or turkey, which could cause food poisoning

*Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and onion powder are toxic to dogs and cats

*Keep bones, food wrappers, aluminum foil and waxed paper away from your pets

Animal Services also says having holiday guests may cause stress to your pets, especially shy or territorial animals. Provide a safe place for your pet to get away from the activity and to keep them from begging for food during the Thanksgiving meal.
Animal Services also says to make sure your pet is wearing a secure collar with an ID tag in case he or she gets loose. Officials say to consider getting your pet microchipped as an added safety measure.

The City of Chico Animal Shelter at 2579 Fair Street will be closed to the public this Thursday. Regular hours will resume Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm.
