Red Bluff Man Killed in Deputy Involved Shooting in Butte County

Before 12:30 Monday afternoon the Butte County Sheriff's Office received reports from the Red Bluff P-D that a suspect in a domestic violence and attempted murder incident had fled the area in a Ford F-150 pickup and could be in Butte County.

Deputies spotted the truck in Durham and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Richard Moulton however fled, leading deputies on a pursuit. The suspect stopped the truck at Highway 162 and Aguas Frias Road and he reportedly put a handgun to his head. Moulton then got out of the vehicle and allegedly raised the gun at the deputies. According a Butte County Sheriff's press release, the deputies fired in response to the threat. Life saving measures were initiated however, Moulton was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say nine deputies were involved in the incident and have been removed from the field and placed in administrative duties as the investigation from the Butte County Officer Involved Shooting/Critical Incident Protocol Team into the shooting is underway.
