Inmate Attempts an Escape During a Trial

A Butte County Sheriff's Deputy prevents an inmate from escaping on his last day before retirement.

An inmate attempts to escape during a jury trial. 35-year-old Dustin Lehning from Chico, who was on trial for felony elder abuse of his mother late last week. Lehning was facing the possibility of life in prison due to the charges.

Deputy Christofferson who was assigned as a Bailiff in a jury the trial noticed Lehning reportedly acting as if he was looking for a way to escape when the deputy left the courtroom to deliver some paperwork. The deputy then blocked the doorway. Lehning was then seen allegedly started moving towards a Deputy District Attorney. The deputy attempted to restrain him, but Lehning reportedly got away leading the deputy on a foot chase through the courthouse. The deputy was able to stop him before he got to the door however, Lehning allegedly resisted arrest prompting the deputy to use a taser and was able to take Lehning into custody.
