An Assembly member Introduces a State Constitutional Amendment to abolish California's death penalty. Democratic Assembly member Marc Levine of Marin County led a statewide coalition of 23 members of the legislature in announcing the introduction of Assembly Constitutional Amendment 12, to abolish the death penalty in 2020. According to a press release from the North Bay Assemblyman, it would also require the re-sentencing of existing death penalty cases to a sentence of a lifetime imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Critics argue that this is going against the will of the people and the death penalty still remains the ultimate deterrent to crime.
