Democratic leaders are preparing to support Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal for a special election in November. Newsom says he's responding to President Trump urging Texas Republicans to redistrict for 2026 to secure GOP control. Newsom wants to allow lawmakers to temporarily regain the power to redraw congressional district maps. It was taken away in 2008 and given to an independent commission. Polling by Democratic leaders on Sunday indicates just over half of those polled favor the special election, while 41 percent oppose it. Seven percent are undecided.
