Blue States Sue Trump over SNAP Benefit Funding
Twenty-five states are suing the Trump administration over the suspension of food assistance benefits because of the government shutdown. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the money just isn't there.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday against the Department of Agriculture comes as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is set to run out of money November 1st. It's expected to affect some 42 million Americans. The lawsuit argues the suspension of the benefits is illegal and a clear violation of the Food and Nutrition Act. It calls on the USDA to use contingency funds to pay for benefits in November.
