Chico Woman v Social Media
The plaintiff in a landmark social media addiction trial says she became hooked on the apps as early as the age of six. The 20-year-old woman from Chico is suing Google and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram. On Thursday, she took the stand in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, testifying that her social media dependence contributed to years of anxiety, depression and body dysmorphia. She also said not receiving likes, comments or subscribers on the platforms had an emotional impact. Her lawsuit accuses tech companies of intentionally engineering social media platforms to become addictive for kids and teens. TikTok and Snapchat were initially named as defendants in the lawsuit but settled before the trial started.
