Governor Newsom is threatening to take funding from counties not using his CARE Court program. The program, launched in 2023, is designed to get people with severe mental illness off the streets. It uses the courts to get people into mental health treatment. Newsom called out ten counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Bernardino, Kern, Riverside, Yolo, Monterey and Fresno. He says they "haven't gotten it done" and blames them for the slow implementation of the program. He also told leaders of those counties "don't make any more excuses."
