State of Union Recap

President Trump's State of the Union address was interrupted by Democrats on several occasions. The address delivered before Congress last night was the longest State of the Union speech on record, clocking in at an hour and 47 minutes. During his remarks on immigration, Trump was repeatedly heckled by congresswomen Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who both shouted, "you're killing Americans." Other Democratic hecklers included representatives Gil Cisneros of California, Gwen Moore of Wisconsin and Lois Frankel of Florida.

Newsome proposes Millions for Illegals

Governor Newsom is setting aside 35 million dollars to support undocumented immigrants as deportations increase. The money will help community groups provide food and other aid to immigrant families. This is on top of funds already allocated for legal help. California is providing aid despite a nearly three-billion-dollar deficit and after limiting healthcare for undocumented immigrants. Over the summer, President Trump approved 170 billion dollars for immigration enforcement to deport up to one million people a year for four years.

CA State Parks Bidwell Mansion Update

California State Parks is preparing to engage the community in shaping the future of the Bidwell Mansion. Matthew Allen, the district superintendent for Northern Buttes District of California State Parks, explained that they plan to launch an outreach effort in March to gather community input on the mansion's future...By April, they hope to hold a virtual meeting to present data and gather public input, the feedback will guide the rebuilding process. Allen stressed that work continues behind the scenes.

Ninth Victim Recovered after Avalanche in Sierra

The bodies of all nine victims have been recovered from the site of the deadliest avalanche in California history. In addition to the nine victims, six people survived last Tuesday's avalanche in a backcountry ski area near Lake Tahoe. Their eyewitness accounts will be critical as officials investigate the avalanche that rolled through. Meanwhile, mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil held in their honor last night in the town of Truckee.

Chico PD applications Community Advisory Committee

- The Chico Police Department is calling for applications from community members to join its Community Advisory Board. The deadline for applications is Wednesday Feb. 25, 2026. The board seeks individuals who represent the city's diverse population to engage in open and respectful dialogues aimed at improving community service and addressing local needs. Chico Man Faces Charges attempted Murder BCSO Deputy

A 32-year-old Chico man accused of attempting to murder a Butte County Sheriff's deputy was arraigned Thursday and ordered held without bail, according to the Butte County District Attorney's Office. Kristian Stevens faces a charge of attempted murder of a peace officer, along with additional firearm, theft and drug-related offenses. The DA's office said Stevens was also arraigned on two counts of evading Chico Police during pursuits in Chico on Feb. 13 while driving two different vehicles. He is scheduled to return to court Feb. 26 to enter a plea.

Oroville Woman Guilty of Elder Abuse

A 47 year-old Chico woman has admitted to elder abuse and could spend three decades in prison. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey says Desiree Serena has admitted to the repeated abuse of a man in his 70's who was in her care. Investigators say Herrera was working as the man's home health assistant. Relatives say she kept the man confined to his house. Prosecutors say she forced the man to sleep on the floor and keeping his family members away from the home all while managing his life and finances. Herrera pled guilty to charges of elder abuse and felony assault. As part of the plea agreement Herrera will receive the upper term of 29 years in state prison

Body of Missing Chico Woman identified

The remains of an 85 year-old woman from Chico found in Shasta County. Shasta County officials say a car tied to Dolores Sakamoto was found in March of 2025 in a remote logging road in northeastern Shasta County. Police say the car belonged to Sakomoto and her 64 year-old daughter Vivian Luna. Two bodies were found inside the car and the Shasta County coroner's office confirms that one set of the remains belongs to Sakomoto. Testing with Chico State anthropology is taking place to identify the second body

Butte County Supervisors approve Funding for Community Wildfire Safety Plan

The Butte County Board of Supervisors is planning to utilize nearly $500,000 in disaster recovery funds to enhance community safety.The funding was awarded to Butte County in 2024 following the Camp Fire. The allocated money will be directed toward developing a plan for roadside fuels reduction. This involves clearing dry brush, grass, and other flammable materials along roadways to slow wildfire spread and ensure safer evacuation routes. They aim to create a comprehensive countywide fuel reduction plan that includes phasing and long-term funding strategies. final approval of the plan depends on the state.

BCPH Flu Cases Increase

Butte County's flu season is intensifying with flu rates reaching 14.5% in early February. This marks the highest level in the past three years, according to Butte County Public Health. Butte County Public Health Officer Jarett Beaudoin. says Hospitalizations have surged to more than 2.5%, more than double the typical rate for a flu season. He explained that a challenging flu variant, H3, is contributing to the rise in cases. Now 3 people have died from flu-related complications this season in Butte County, with another possible flu death under investigation.. Public Health Officials stress the importance of taking steps to stop the spread by doing the basics like washing your hands.

Gas Price Concerns w Refinery Closure

Concerns are growing in California that gas prices could go even higher after an oil refinery near San Francisco announced it was shutting down. Valero Energy announced its plans last spring to close down its 145-thousand-barrel-per-day refinery by April. The closure ended up happening over the weekend, driving up speculation that fuel prices in the state may now skyrocket.

POTUS Endorses Gallagher for District 1 Seat

President Donald J. Trump has endorsed California Assemblyman James Gallagher for the U.S. Representative seat vacated by Congressman Doug LaMalfa. President Trump personally called Gallagher on Wednesday to offer his endorsement. Gallagher has also received support from the LaMalfa family, every sheriff in the district, and a growing number of elected officials and community leaders. He has represented the North State since being elected to the California State Assembly in 2014.

Chico Unified Clear Bag Policy

Chico Unified School District is taking a proactive step to help enhance safety and security at its most highly attended high school events with the introduction of a new Clear Bag Policy, effective January 1, 2026, and rolling out this spring. ยท Some highly attended high school spring sports may have the Clear Bag Policy in effect. Large CUSD events at the Center for Arts (CFA) or school stadiums (such as graduation) may also have the policy in effect.

Chico PD Community Meeting

The Chico Police Department will be hosting a community engagement meeting to discuss their Military Equipment Use Annual Report for 2025. Authorities say the event aims to promote transparency and dialogue between law enforcement and the public. The meeting has been scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday, February 23 at the Old Municipal Building located at 441 Main Street in Chico.

Chico Man Charge in Shooting NY Day

A Chico man is facing a possible life in prison sentence after a fatal shooting in Chico on New Year's Day. Dante Murphy charged by the Butte County District Attorney's Office with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. The criminal complaint filed on Friday also alleges multiple firearm enhancements that expose Murphy to a life sentence in state prison. According to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, the charges stem from an incident in downtown Chico that occurred on Jan. 1, at approximately 1:51 a.m. Murphy allegedly shot and killed Sean Ray Allen, Jr., 30, during a verbal altercation
