Butte College Ranked as One of the Best in the US

Butte College has been recognized as one of the top community colleges in the nation. WalletHub ranked the college 55th out of more than 650 community colleges across the United States. Statewide, Butte College secured the 14th spot among the state's 116 community colleges. WalletHub's annual ranking evaluates colleges on 18 key indicators, including in-state tuition, graduation rates and student-faculty ratios.

Oroville Couple Charged in Death of 2 yr old

An Oroville couple facing charges related to the fentanyl death of their two-year-old son. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey says Chelsea Whitfield and Anthony Solansky are facing charges of felony child endangerment with a special allegation that the endangerment led to their child's death. The incident occurred on March 9, when the child was taken to Oroville Hospital after being found unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead due to acute fentanyl intoxication. BOth face up to 12 years in state prison if convicted. They are currently held without bail, awaiting their plea hearing on August 28.

FIRE VICTIMS SUE PGE IN FEDERAL COURT OVER TRUST PAYMENTS

A number of Fire victims gathered in federal court as part of ongoing lawsuits against Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Thousands are awaiting full payouts from the Fire Victims Trust, established to compensate those impacted by fires like the Camp Fire and Tubs Fire. The victims claim that both PG&E and the Fire Victims Trust have not been transparent in the process. PGE Officals responding to the suit state the utlity did not have a role in selecting the trustee or administrator and does not have a role in reviewing claims or making payments to fire victims from the fire victim trust." To date, the Fire Victims Trust has paid out $13.7 billion to survivors. One final payment is expected to bring Camp Fire recipients to 70% of their total claims.

PARADISE TOWN MANAGER LEAVING

The Town of Paradise is parting ways with their Town Manager as they continue recovery efforts from the Camp Fire.... Paradise Council members made the decision oust Jim Goodwin during closed session on Tuesday night. Goodwin served for two years in guiding and navigating the rebuilding town as they look to reinvent themselves after the Camp Fire nearly 7 years ago. Mayor Steve Crowder announced that Paradise Police Chief Eric Reinbold would step in as Town Manager on an interim basis. Goodwin had been town manager for Wheatland and Live Oak and also led the Chico Chamber of Commerce for 12 years.

STATE SUPREME COURT REJECTS GOP REDISTRICTING SUIT

The California Supreme Court is rejecting a Republican challenge to Governor Gavin Newsom's redistricting plan. GOP lawmakers had petitioned the court in an attempt to block Democrats from redrawing the state's congressional districts. California lawmakers are expected to vote today on whether to place their new map before voters on the ballot. Newsom has pushed the redistricting plan in California as a way to counteract Texas GOP lawmakers re-drawing their district maps in an attempt to gain more Republican seats in the U.S. House before the midterm elections next year.

Butte Home Health & Hospice reaches agreement with Enloe Health

A massive shift in health care is coming to Butte County and the surrounding areas as Enloe Health will cease operations in hospice care.... Taking the baton from Enloe will be Butte Home Health and Hospice which has agreed to take the patients that Enloe was treating. Robert Love is the C.E.O. of Butte Home Health and he says the Enloe move falls in line with what many hospitals are doing across the country.... Love says they specialize in this targeted care and believes they will be able to not only care for the patients they already have but also meet the demands of the Enloe patients who are transferring to their programs

Butte Co Supervisors Approve 5 Mile Sediment Project

Butte County is advancing a plan to address sediment build-up at the Five Mile Recreation Area in Chico's Lower Bidwell Park. The work is expected to start within weeks. Public Works Director Joshua Pack presented three plans to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The board opted for a short-term solution that aims to mitigate the issue before this year's winter storms.

Newsome pleads with Trump to end Redistricting

California Governor Gavin Newsom is urging President Trump to end his calls for redistricting. Newsom issued a letter to Trump warning that GOP efforts to draw more favorable maps ahead of the midterms were "playing with fire," and it comes the president doubles down on his push by calling for a new census. Governor Newsom had previously launched a redistricting effort to counter moves in other states that could increase GOP seats in the House. However, Newsom pledged in his letter that California would stand down if red states did the same.

LaMalfa breaks with Trump on Redistricting

Northstate Republican Doug LaMalfa is not a fan of Texas' plan to redraw their Congressional district lines to secure more GOP seats in Congress.... In a break with President Trump, LaMalfa says the move by Texas would force other states to redraw their lines resulting in chaos and even more politicizaiton of the process.. He says gerrymandering districts based on race and demographic is bad practice.... President Trump urged Texas Republicans to redraw their lines so they could secure more House seats in the 2026 election

NEWSOME PROPOSES SPECIAL ELECTION FOR REDISTRICTING

Democratic leaders are preparing to support Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal for a special election in November. Newsom says he's responding to President Trump urging Texas Republicans to redistrict for 2026 to secure GOP control. Newsom wants to allow lawmakers to temporarily regain the power to redraw congressional district maps. It was taken away in 2008 and given to an independent commission. Polling by Democratic leaders on Sunday indicates just over half of those polled favor the special election, while 41 percent oppose it. Seven percent are undecided.

OROVILLE MAN FACES PRISON ARSON CHARGES

An Oroville man known for his past arson conviction faced new charges in Butte County Superior Court on Tuesday. Alfonso Pasillas of Oroville was arraigned on a new arson charge after allegedly starting a fire with a flare gun. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said that on August 2, Pasillas caused a grass fire by firing flares from a flare gun. One of these flares landed in dry grass on La Mirada Avenue in rural east Oroville, igniting a blaze. The Butte County District Attorney's Office says that Pasillas was previously convicted of attempted arson in early 2024. Pasillas is scheduled to return to court on August 7, 2025, for a plea entry and preliminary hearing setting. If convicted, Pasillas could face up to 12 years in state prison.

CHICO TRIES TO REWORK WARREN SETTLEMENT

The City of Chico is taking new legal steps to address ongoing frustrations tied to the Warren v. Chico settlement agreement. Mayor Kasey Reynolds says the city has hired a new team of attorneys and expects paperwork to be filed in court by the end of the week. The goal: gain clarity on how the agreement is being enforced. Mayor Kacey Reynolds told Action News the city isn't trying to exit the agreement, but believes several parts are being misapplied—especially as camps return just hours after being cleared. The Agreement continues thru 2027
